Is Baidu a copycat? Robin Li explains the biggest difference between Baidu and Google

Chinese search engine Baidu has been the king of China’s search game for a long time, since well before Google decided to leave the Chinese market. But given the similarities between their services and, especially in the early days, their aesthetic, comparisons between Baidu and Google are common. In the foreign press, Baidu is often called the “Chinese Google,” or flat-out accused of being a Google copycat.

But how does Baidu founder and CEO Robin Li see the differences between his company and the American search behemoth? He answered that question at a Baidu Q&A session several months ago, the transcript of which has just been released.

Here’s what he said (our translation):

You can talk about the difference between Baidu and Google in two different stages. In the early days when the focus was PC-based search, the main thing we did [differently] was UGC, or User Generated Content. This is a bit different from the American understanding of “search”: in our development phase we did not just passively index content already on the web. Instead we targeted Chinese users to create new content. For example Baidu Tieba, the largest Chinese-language forums, with nearly 100 million daily active users, they’ve been commenting [on Baidu Tieba] since December of 2003. Every comment that came in was indexed and searched by Baidu. A bit later on Baidu Knows, Baidu Wiki, and other services all came from this concept. We allowed our users to create portals and to create content, and then used search technology to index it. That was the biggest difference between Baidu’s approach and Google’s during Baidu’s development in the PC search era.

In the mobile search era, there are huge differences between Baidu and Google [services], and even bigger differences in terms of philosophy. Google has spent more energy on the Android ecosystem, how to create more Android apps, and how to create industries that might become massive in 20 years, like driverless cars, health-focused hardware…they’re thinking about that kind of thing.

For Baidu, it’s about not only connecting information but also connecting services. For example if you open Baidu and input “cinema,” it will tell you what theaters are within 1.1 km of you, what time the movies showing start, what seats are available to buy, and even let you pick a seat and pay directly. A whole series of actions can all be done from within Baidu [Search]. Google hasn’t done this kind of thing. They don’t see it as something they do: ‘we’ll index whatever’s available on the web for you and that’s enough.’ In our eyes, China’s web users don’t care about whether or not these services are Baidu’s responsibility, they just care about whether they can get what they want here [in our search].

In the early days I had a relatively hard time accepting this mindset. For example, if someone searched for something on Baidu but didn’t search well and got scammed [on a site that popped up in the results], that information wasn’t Baidu’s. I just indexed it, and at first my thinking was: that’s not my problem. But later we came to realize that if other people see it as your your problem, then it’s your problem, and you need to find a way to solve it. So we made a safety guarantee plan, sort of like insurance, so that if you’re scammed by some site you found in Baidu’s search, although Baidu didn’t scam you we will still compensate you. This concept slowly became: the facts [of a search] are not important, what’s important is what people think, and if people think something you’ve got to find a way to resolve it.

In the mobile era, we found that when people searched “cinema”, their ultimate goal wasn’t just to see what movies were out, it was to actually go to the theater and watch a movie. So we thought of a way to satisfy them. We don’t want users to just be getting information here, we want them to get the services [that they’re actually looking for], as that is more convenient for them. Luckily China’s economic development has been quick, so traditional industries are very open and willing to work with internet companies. That’s how we’re able to integrate our IT system with movie theaters. That’s the biggest difference between us and Google in the mobile era.

Nexus 6 promotional materials reaching Verizon stores

Nexus 6 promotional materials reaching Verizon stores

We have seen Verizon logo-bearing Nexus 6 leaked images, and even Verizon put up a teaser for the (not so new) device. Could it be that the super-sized Nexus is finally about to hit Big Red? We certainly hope so, as it has been about 3 months since the phone was launched.
If the latest leak circulating the inter webs is true, Verizon is almost ready for this launch. An image of the promotional materials has been leaked, and the anonymous source states there’s also training materials and test devices reaching the stores. These posters and other materials are said to be put up come MArch 11th, wth devices becoming available the next day.
Opinion: Remember these are still simply leaks and rumors. And even if the information is correct, it could change at ay given time. Are you still excited to get the Nexus 6 on Verizon? I mean… at this point we may as well wait for MWC’s announcements.

Huawei 4.5G smartband announced with LTE

We knew Huawei was working on a couple of wearables, and assumed we’d see them next week at MWC 2015 in Barcelona. Apparently, Huawei didn’t want to wait as they have already announced a new wearable called the Huawei 4.5G smartband.
Last month, we found out Huawei was going to unleash a slew of new gadgets, and among the devices shown were two wearables. We haven’t seen the smartwatch yet, but the Huawei 4.5G smartband and it has LTE connectivity. That’s something we didn’t see coming, and while the name sounds odd, it’s because the new wearable will support the 4.5G network that rolls out next year.
In terms of specs, the Huawei 4.5G smartband will sport a 1.4-inch OLED display and it will be water and dust resistant like most wearables of this nature. It will have some fitness tracking features built in as well including a heart rate monitor. Nothing is known about the chip powering the smartband or any other features at this time.
We’re unsure of the Huawei 4.5G smartband release date and pricing at this time, but we expect to learn more when Huawei shows off the 4.5G next week at MWC 2015. As it’s assumed to be the follow-up to the TalkBand, it should be affordable.
What do you think about Huawei’s new smartband?

Solar Powered Kyocera smartphone coming to MWC 2015

When you think MWC 2015, you probably think of the Galaxy S6, HTC One M9 or maybe a slick new slate from Sony. A company that will have one of the smaller reveals, may actually have one of the more intriguing devices at the event as a Solar Powered Kyocera smartphone is set to be shown off.
Whenever a big tech expo rolls around, there is always a device or two that takes us by surprise. This year it could be Kyocera solar powered smartphone, which is said to charge itself up with Wysips Crystal technology. The tech has been applied to a version of the Torque, and it’s still in the prototype stages so it isn’t ready for prime time just yet.
The Wysips tech is a layer that’s actually placed below the touchscreen and it’s very thin at only .5mm. What’s more is the fact that the Kyocera prototype can charge in both sunlight and artificial light, so you won’t have to leave it lying in the sun to catch a little juice. Did we mention it’s always on? The tech is designed to give you a “reserve” of sorts so you’ll always have enough juice to place an emergency call or make a mobile payment.
The Galaxy S6 is set to arrive with wireless charging, but we’ve got to admit, solar charging would is an option we’re much more excited about. Being able to charge your phone up sans cords or other contraptions would be great – if it’s done right. At this time we’re not sure if we’ll see a consumer version from Kyocera or how long it takes to actually charge the prototype, but we’ll find out more next week at MWC.

Xiaomi Mi4 battery life performance compared

The Xiaomi Mi4 smartphone released last August but is a more recent arrival to the scene in India. Xiaomi handsets have been proving extremely popular recently and the Mi4 is unlikely to be an exception. Something that concerns many potential buyers when buying a new smartphone is the battery life, and so some readers may be interested in Xiaomi Mi4 battery life performance and how it compares with some other handsets on the market.
The Mi4 packs a 3080 mAh battery, which is nicely sizeable and reassuring considering that it’s non-removable. For full specs you might like to take a look at our price and specs comparison of the Mi4 vs. HTC Desire 820, or a recent video look of the OnePlus One vs. Mi4. Battery life testing on the Mi4 has now been conducted and it’s interesting to see how it stands up against other popular devices.
The testing by Fone Arena is split into different categories, Talk Time, 3G Browsing, WiFi Browsing, and Video Playback. Just a few of the comparison handsets include the Moto X 2nd gen, iPhone 6, Samsung Galaxy A5, and Lenovo Vibe X2 as well as the OnePlus One and Desire 820.
For Talk Time the Xiaomi Mi4 managed 16 hours and 39 minutes, putting it around mid-table (image below) behind one of its main rivals the One Plus One that achieved 20 hours. The Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro was top in this respect as it managed an impressive 33 hours and 19 minutes, and second and third spots were taken by HTC’s Desire 820 and the iPhone 6 Plus.
Xiaomi Mi4 battery life
Xiaomi Mi4 battery life b
Next we move on to 3G Browsing and in this testing the Xiaomi Mi4 took equal top spot. It achieved a time of 6 hours and 15 minutes, which was matched exactly by the iPhone 6 Plus. By comparison the Samsung Galaxy Alpha was at the bottom after managing only 2 hours and 56 minutes.
Looking at the WiFi Browsing results sees another great result for the Mi4. It attained 9 hours and 5 minutes, tying this time with the iPhone 6 at the very top of the table. The One Plus One is mid-table with 6 hours and 15 minutes while the bottom spot is taken by the HTC Desire 820 on just 3 hours and 12 minutes.
Finally we get to Video Playback and the tables are well and truly turned this time around. The Xiaomi Mi4 is at the very lowest place on the table achieving only 6 hours and 39 minutes. The OnePlus One is third on a time of 9 hours and 5 minutes. Prepare to have your socks blown off by the results of the iPhone 6 Plus though, as it came top in this category with a massive 20-hour score.
We’ve embedded a couple of the tables here but you can see the others at the source link below. It would be good to hear your thoughts on the results of the Xiaomi Mi4 in this battery life testing as it provides a mixed picture. Are you impressed or not?
